Why Working With a Travel Advisor Matters!

A Real-Life Client Success Story

Many people wonder whether using a travel advisor is still necessary in a world where reservations can be made online in just a few clicks.

This week provided the perfect example of why the answer is a resounding yes.

A few days before one of our clients was scheduled to arrive at a beautiful resort in Puerto Rico, I received an unexpected call from the resort. Due to several large groups booking the property, the hotel side of the resort had become oversold. As a result, the resort was preparing to cancel or relocate accommodations for affected guests.

Fortunately, because the reservation had been booked through our agency, the resort contacted us directly instead of leaving the client to discover the issue on their own.

The resort's initial solution was to place our client in a different section of the property for the first night and then have them move to the hotel side the following day once space became available.

While this may sound like a reasonable solution on paper, experienced travelers know that moving accommodations during a vacation is rarely convenient. It means unpacking, repacking, coordinating luggage transfers, checking out, checking in again, and ultimately losing valuable vacation time. What should be a relaxing getaway suddenly becomes an unnecessary logistical challenge.

Rather than simply accepting the first offer, I immediately began advocating for my client.

During my conversations with the resort, I learned that the alternative accommodations were located in Las Casitas, the resort's vacation ownership section. What caught my attention was that these accommodations typically command rates exceeding $800 per night and offer additional amenities not available in the standard hotel accommodations.

That led me to ask a simple question:

If my client could stay there for the first night, why couldn't they remain there for the entire stay?

The answer initially was that only the first night was oversold, and the hotel expected to have availability for the remainder of the reservation. While technically true, that solution still created a significant inconvenience for the guest.

I respectfully explained the situation from the client's perspective. Vacation time is valuable. No traveler wants to spend a day of their trip coordinating room changes when a better solution exists. After additional discussions and some professional persistence, the resort agreed.

The result?

Our client received a complimentary upgrade to Las Casitas for the entire stay, at no additional cost.

Instead of dealing with a mid-vacation move, they were able to settle into upgraded accommodations and enjoy enhanced amenities throughout their trip. The upgraded experience included access to additional recreational areas, multiple pool experiences, including lazy rivers, and the elevated atmosphere that comes with the vacation ownership side of the resort.

Most importantly, our client was able to focus on enjoying their vacation rather than dealing with a problem they didn't create.

This is what travel advisors do behind the scenes every day.

We monitor reservations.
We solve problems.
We negotiate solutions.
We advocate for our clients.
We leverage industry relationships.
And when things don't go according to plan, we work to turn challenges into opportunities.

Could a traveler have handled this situation themselves? Perhaps.

But it would have required time, multiple phone calls, negotiations, and a thorough understanding of the property's room categories and available alternatives. Many travelers simply accept the first solution presented because they don't know what options might exist.

Having a travel advisor means having someone in your corner who understands the industry and knows when to ask the right questions.

The best part? Our client recently sent photos from the trip, and seeing the excitement and appreciation made every minute spent advocating on their behalf worthwhile.

Travel is about creating memories, not managing problems.

That's why we do what we do.

And that's why having a dedicated travel advisor like A Love for Adventures can make all the difference.
