Travel Agent vs. Advisor: There Really Is a Difference
Let me start by saying this: there is something for everyone. And this is absolutely not a criticism of part-time travel agents. Not at all.
Over the past year, as I’ve continued to grow our agency, train, learn, visit with suppliers around the world, tour properties and cruise ships, and accept incredible invitations and opportunities within our industry, I’ve had the privilege of meeting a LOT of travel professionals.
And as I listen to their conversations, I’ve realized there is something worth talking about:
There is a difference between a travel agent and a travel advisor.
So, What Is a Travel Agent?
There are many people who become travel agents because they love to travel themselves. Maybe they want access to travel perks, industry rates, or simply want to turn their passion for travel into something they can do on the side.

Others are part-time because they already have a full-time career but have always been the person their friends and family turn to when someone needs help planning a vacation, cruise, or group trip.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
In fact, I’ve met agents who openly say, “I simply book what people ask me to book.”
They have access. They can make the reservation. They can get you where you want to go.
And sometimes, that is exactly what someone needs.
If you already know exactly what resort you want, exactly which cruise you want, exactly what cabin you want, and exactly when you want to go, having someone make the reservation for you can be perfectly sufficient.
Then There Is the Travel Advisor.
A travel advisor takes a different approach.
A true travel advisor isn't simply asking, “Where do you want to go?”
They're asking:
“What do you want this trip to feel like?”
What do you enjoy?
What don't you enjoy?
Are you a foodie? An adventurer? Someone who wants relaxation and quiet? Do you love excursions or prefer to stay at the resort? Are you traveling with children? Aging parents? A group of friends? Is mobility a consideration? Is this a once-in-a-lifetime celebration?
What matters most to you?
Because sometimes what you think you want isn't actually what you need.
That's where the advisor comes in.
We Don't Just Sell the Vacation. We Learn YOU.
As travel advisors, we invest an enormous amount of time learning.
We attend trainings. We tour ships. We visit resorts. We meet hotel managers, destination representatives, cruise executives, tour operators and local partners. We develop relationships with suppliers and travel professionals around the world.
And, importantly, we travel ourselves.
Why?
Because there's a huge difference between telling you what a brochure says and telling you what we personally experienced.
I can tell you what a resort's website says.
Or I can tell you what the room actually felt like.
I can tell you that a cruise ship has 20 restaurants.
Or I can tell you which ones I would choose for your anniversary dinner.
I can tell you that a destination has an excursion.
Or I can tell you whether I think you will actually enjoy it.
Google knows everything.
But Google doesn't know what matters to you.
That's the difference.
Your Time Is Valuable, Too.
Here's another part people sometimes overlook.
When you book directly, you may save the advisor's fee or commission—but you're often taking on the job yourself. (By the way, we do not charge extra fees!)
Researching destinations.
Comparing resorts.
Reading reviews.
Comparing cabins.
Understanding cancellation policies.
Figuring out transfers.
Researching excursions.
Watching for price changes.
Understanding travel insurance.
Keeping up with schedule changes.
And then, if something goes wrong?
You're on your own.
A travel advisor doesn't just save you money when possible.
A travel advisor saves you TIME.
And time is something you can never get back.
A Travel Advisor Protects Your Investment.

Your vacation may represent thousands—or tens of thousands—of dollars.
That's an investment worth protecting.
A travel advisor is there to help you make informed decisions before you spend that money and to help navigate problems when things don't go according to plan.
And that's especially important because travel doesn't always go according to plan.
Flights get canceled.
Ships change itineraries.
Hotels have unexpected issues.
Weather happens.
Airlines lose luggage.
Things happen.
And while you're sleeping, your travel advisor may be working on finding solutions.
That's part of the value.
It's About Experience and Relationships.
One of the things I've noticed more and more as I become deeper involved in this industry is just how important relationships are.
We meet people from cruise lines, resorts, hotels, tour companies, destinations and travel organizations all over the world.
We ask questions.
We learn.
We experience.
We build relationships.
And those relationships can matter when you need help.
I've met travel professionals who have completely different careers during the day—accountants, flight attendants, security professionals, TSA employees and so many others—who also happen to sell travel.
Again, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
But it's important for the traveler to understand that having access to a booking system and being a full-time travel professional aren't necessarily the same thing.
Think About It This Way...
Would you want a part-time student of dentistry performing your dental extraction?
Would you trust your investments to someone who only occasionally works in financial services?
Of course not.
You want someone who has the education, experience, ongoing training and professional resources to help protect something important to you.
Why should your travel investment be any different?
Your vacation is your time.
Your money.
Your memories.
Sometimes it's a honeymoon.
A milestone birthday.
A family reunion.
A bucket-list adventure.
A celebration of life.
Or perhaps the one vacation you've been saving for years to take.
Those moments deserve more than simply clicking “Book.”
And That's What I See in These Pictures.
The people represented in these photos come from all different backgrounds and levels of involvement in the travel industry.
Some are travel agents who primarily book what their clients request.
And that's okay.
Others are incredible travel advisors who have made travel their profession, continuously invest in education, personally experience destinations and products, and build relationships throughout the industry.
And I'm incredibly proud to say that I see that same commitment in the advisors at A Love for Adventures.
We don't want to simply sell you a vacation.
We want to understand your adventure.
We want to help you find the right experience—not just the easiest reservation.
We want to be the person you can call when you aren't sure what to book, when you need an honest opinion, and especially when something doesn't go according to plan.
Because ultimately, that's what a travel advisor should be.
Someone who doesn't just know where to book.
Someone who knows why you're going.
So the next time you're planning your vacation, I hope you think about the difference.
There is a place for the travel agent who simply books what you ask for.
But when you're looking for someone to research, recommend, personalize, educate, advocate and protect your investment...
Look for a travel advisor.
Just my two cents. ❤️✈️🌎
